I once knew love.
Love that no one could measure.
In my eternal life, I only dreamed
Of that man who once held my heart.
Oh, Hyacinthus
I still hear your voice
And feel the touch on my skin.
I would trade my eternity for you.
I would trade my life for you.
Your beauty attracted many
Suitors from West, North, and East.
But even with their songs and blessings
They dutifully offered
You still chose me.
Oh, Hyacinthus.
I still hear your call.
I dream of the warmth of your embrace.
I long for those soft lips
That brushed across my skin.
Although I would lay my life for you
I wished you would have chosen differently,
Because the universe thought that taking away
Would compensate for my sins.
Jealousy is powerful.
Something I should have foreseen.
But my arrogance brought your end
And provoked dear old Zephyrus
To snatch you away.
Dear Hyacinthus,
Your blood is on me.
I would trade my eternity for you.
Please don’t leave me.
I’ve begged Hades to give you back
And asked Thanos to let me be with you
One more time-
Oh, just one more time!
Please don’t leave!
But immortality doesn’t work that way.
And oh, I see that now.
Let this Hyacinth be a reminder
Of you to everyone
Of how beautiful you once were.
I fell in love once.
Love that no one can measure.
His name was Hyacinthus.
The most beautiful mortal.
The prince of Sparta.

Hi, I’m CyCy!
Thank you for reading. I truly appreciate it!
This poem, like the others, came as a musical score in my dreams last night. Needless to say, I was sobbing.
This poem is inspired by the tragic Greek/Roman Mythology: Hyacinthus.
Hyacinthus was a Spartan Prince known for his beauty and gentle heart. He had many mortal and Godly suitors – that included the Wind Gods: Zephyrus (West Wind God), Boreas (North Wind God); and a mortal man named Thamyris.
Even with all these notable suitors, Hyacinthus chose Apollo.
One tragic day, Apollo and he were having a friendly competition called quotis (you can imagine it as an ultimate frisbee in this lore). Ecstatic to show off his skills and to impress his lover, Apollo threw the discus first. The throw had parted the sky which truly impressed Hyacinthus.
Eager to catch the discus, Hyacinthus ran after it. But when it hit the ground, the discus flew back and sliced Hyacinthus’ temple – fatally wounding him.
In this version, Zephyrus was responsible for the discus flying back and killing Hyacinthus. You see, Zephyrus did not take the rejection lightly and instead of letting Apollo and Hyacinthus be happy, Zephyrus decided that Hyacinthus would be better off dead.
“If I can’t have him, neither can you.”
Apollo tried his best to end his life, so he may join Hyacinthus in the afterlife. However, this was unachievable due to his immortality. He was bound to live forever with guilt and feel the absence of the love he once knew.
As a way to remember Hyacinthus, Apollo created a flower from Hyacinthus’ blood and inscribed the word “Al” (Alas) on its petals.
Shout out to one of my faves, Phoebus Apollo 🖤
