Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village Review

As a fan of the series, I found myself eagerly anticipating the release of the new movie.

After binging, falling in love with the show, and watching the previous film, Mugen Train, the series left an indelible mark on me.

Its breathtaking animation, engrossing storytelling, and pulse-pounding action had set a high bar for any subsequent entries in the franchise.

And with the release of the second season, the District Arc, my excitement for the new movie only intensified. The twists and turns of the story had left me on the edge of my seat, craving more of the thrilling and emotional journey that this series had taken me on.

It had set a high standard for what I expected from future installments.

All in all, I couldn’t wait to see what new adventures and challenges awaited our beloved characters in the upcoming movie.

Wait, CyCy! What is Demon Slayer about anyway?

Glad you asked!

Here is the premise if you have not seen it yet (I will try not to spoil anything if you have not seen it yet):

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a popular manga series created by the talented writer and illustrator Koyoharu Gotouge

This series has captured the attention of fans worldwide with its thrilling plot, captivating characters, and stunning artwork.

Demon Slayer was set in the Taishō era of Japan, and the secret society called the Demon Slayer Corps, had been fighting a covert war against demons for centuries.

These demons were once humans who were transformed by Muzan Kibutsuji, a powerful demon who injected them with his blood.

They possessed incredible abilities, including super strength, regeneration, and a unique power known as “Blood Demon Art”, which could be acquired through feeding on humans.

Our main character, Tanjiro Kamado, an earnest and kind-hearted boy, earned a living by selling charcoal.

However, his life took a dramatic turn when his family was attacked and killed by a demon. The only survivor was his sister, Nezuko, but she was unfortunately turned into a demon.

To save his sister and seek revenge, Tanjiro joined the Demon Slayer Corps.

This series is currently streaming on Crunchyroll and other sites!

So what do I think about the new movie?

SPOILER ALERT!!! Also please note that this review is 100% based on my opinion. Take my review with a grain of salt.

Before I begin, I deliberately avoided reading or watching anything about the movie before seeing it.

I prefer to go in blind, to prevent biases as much as possible. All I knew was how much I enjoyed the previous one, so I was eager to see if the sequel would live up to my high standards.

As the lights dimmed and the film began, I settled in, ready for whatever surprises awaited me.

Let me start with the pros:

  1. The animation was beautiful and watching this anime on a big screen, and with surround sound sent chills down my spine
  2. It was a great introduction to the rest of the upper-ranked demons
  3. It left you wondering who the Upper Moon 1 Demon was since he was wearing the same earrings as our main character, Tanjiro Kamado

The not-so-pros-part:

While I recognize that this movie was intended to recap previous events and introduce a new arc, I have some critical feedback to share.

I found the transitions between the episodes and scenes from “The Mugen Train” to be poorly executed.

I found it strange to watch the closing credits for every episode being recapped, only to have some scenes repeated right after each other.

It felt like the Creators didn’t take the time to produce a high-quality recap for the fans, which was disheartening. I had hoped for a better “previously before” segment, given the high standards of the series.

In closing, rewatching the previous episodes was not a problem for me, but I do wish that the transitions were smoother and that the after-credit scenes had been omitted.

Despite this, I still enjoyed revisiting the series’ past content. However, the poor execution was a letdown and it took away from the overall experience.

Would this stop me from enjoying the series though?

Absolutely not!

Demon Slayer would remain in my Top 5 favourite Anime Series and I would not let this dishearten me forever.

In fact, I would highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys thrilling and emotionally impactful shows.

It offers a perfect blend of action, drama, and humour that will have you fully engaged and invested in the characters’ journeys.
